A fellow writer, Rachel Dunlop,  has this to say on onee of Etherbooks writers community pages on facebook:

The way I look at it, whoever you are submitting to will get plenty of submissions that are great stories, well written. So they have to decide between them somehow. They will always judge your work in context with their other submissions. They will almost always be looking for a particular style, or subject matter. I've been trying to get Gibbous House published so long, that I've even started writing short stories featuring the novel itself or even the main character... I expect you'll think me quite crazy. I'm waiting for the day when someone tells me the stories are better than the book.
